On the Protracted War was an important article published by Mao Zedong during the War of Resistance against Japanese Agression. Since the July 7th Incident in 1937, the nation had been fighting the Japanese aggressors for 10 months by May 1938, and a lot of Chinese were wondering whether China would be defeated, how long the war would last, and how we could win it.
At such a critical moment, Mao Zedong wrote the article On the Protracted War in May 1938 in Yan’an.
The whole article with more than 50,000 characters was not only published in places like Yan’an and Wuhan but also translated into English and taken overseas, exerting extensive influence. Refuting two wrong views - “China will be subjugated” and “China will win the war soon”, On the Protracted War pointed out the direction of China’s war of resistance and consolidated Chinese people’s confidence in fighting the Japanese aggressors to the end.
