BEIJING, Jan. 23 -- According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, a magnitude-7.1 earthquake hit Wushi County at Aksu Prefecture in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region at 2:09 am on Jan. 23, with an epicenter depth of 22 kilometers. Since then, there have been several aftershocks near the epicenter.
Immediately after the earthquake, the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Xinjiang Military Command and the People's Armed Police (PAP) Force Xinjiang Corps launched their emergency response mechanisms for disaster rescue and relief operations.
As of 6:00 on January 23, a total of more than 630 troops assigned to the PLA Xinjiang Military Command and 678 troops assigned to the PAP Xinjiang Corps had been sent to the earthquake epicenter to carry out disaster verification, risk elimination, and other rescue work.
