BEIJING, June 20 -- In the past few days, continuous heavy rainfall has wreaked havoc in southern China, causing casualties and property losses. Chinese service members and militias keep fighting on the frontline of flood control and disaster relief, devoting themselves to disaster relief and post-disaster re-construction tasks.

Since June 17, the heavy rainfall has caused road damage and power interruption in several areas in Meizhou City, south China's Guangdong Province, posing threats to the safety of people's lives and property.

Up to now, the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Meizhou military sub-command has dispatched 883 militiamen in 12 batches. They have evacuated more than 5,400 people, cleared 13 roads and transported 48 tons of supplies through continuous efforts.

On the morning of June 19, the Meizhou detachment under the Chinese People's Armed Police (PAP)Force Guangdong Corps dispatched 37 soldiers and cleared about 17 kilometers of roads in collaboration with local disaster relief forces.

Continuous downpours also caused various degrees of damage in many areas of southeast China's Fujian Province. The Fujian Provincial Military Command has organized service members and militiamen to fight on the frontline of flood control and disaster relief.

As of 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, the Fujian Provincial Military Command has dispatched 846 service members and militiamen and employed various equipment 55 times and rescue boats 22 times. They have successively rescued and evacuated more than 1,500 people, cleared nearly 30 kilometers of roads, transported over 50 tons of supplies and unclogged 211 blocked vehicles. The PAP Fujian Corps has searched and rescued two buried people and evacuated another 97 residents in Nanping City and Longyan City.

Next, the troops will continue to fight on the frontline of flood control and disaster relief to assist the disaster-affected people to restore work and life order as early as possible.
