BEIJING, Sept. 2 -- The 22nd Chinese peacekeeping multi-role engineering company to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) completed the urgent task of upgrading and renovating the underground bunker fortifications of the UNIFIL Headquarters at the request of UNIFIL's engineering department on Sunday, local time.
As the situation between Lebanon and Israel gets increasingly intense, the protective facilities around some of the underground bunkers of the UNIFIL Headquarters can no longer meet the security needs. After receiving the task, the Chinese engineering company surveyed and marked the damage to the underground bunker defense facilities and the locations for building additional gabion protection walls and formulated a construction plan.
"On the premise of ensuring safety, we overcame adverse factors such as severe security situation and high temperature. We built more than 60 meters of gabion protection walls, transported more than 80 cubic meters of engineering materials, repaired six defensive fortifications, and effectively improved the safety and defense capabilities of the bunker," said Tu Wanpeng of the Chinese peacekeeping engineering company.
The Chinese peacekeeping engineering company completed the task of upgrading and renovating the underground bunker fortifications of the UNIFIL Headquarters five days ahead of schedule after 10 days of intensive construction.
In addition, the company also organized professional forces to inspect and repair the UNIFIL Headquarters' guard posts, guardrails and other defensive fortifications to provide a solid protective barrier for the UNIFIL Headquarters.
It is learnt that since its deployment in December last year, the company has completed 46 engineering construction tasks with high standards, including the erection of razor wire, the construction of gabion protection walls, and the upgrading and renovation of camp defense projects, receiving unanimous praise from the UNIFIL Headquarters, friendly peacekeeping forces and local people.
