On October 14, 1952, the US-led UN troops launched the Kimhwa Offensive, aiming to seize Shangganling. To crush the Offensive, the Chinese people’s volunteers waged a fierce defensive war, namely, the famous Shangganling Battle. In the 43-day battle, the enemy showered over 1.9 million bullets and more than 10,000 bombs on the battle ground of 3,700 square meters guarded by two companies of the volunteer troops. The hill tops were cut short by two meters and the rocks were made into dust of more than one meter thick. The tree truck full of bullet holes and studded with shrapnel was a witness to the fierce Shangganling Battle. It was solicited by the Political Department of the Chinese People’s Volunteer Army during an exhibition at the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea in 1953 and transferred to the Military Museum in 1959.
